Search and visitors

Why broken links cost you

A broken link does not get a site penalized, but it still costs visits and crawl paths.

Visitors hit a dead end

Someone who clicks a link and lands on an error page usually goes back to the search results instead of looking further.

Crawlers lose a path

Search engines find pages by following links. A page that is only linked through a broken URL may not be found or refreshed.

Old links stop passing value

Links from other sites to a removed page help nothing until you redirect that address to the closest replacement with a 301.

What Google says

Google treats 404s for pages that should not exist as normal; they do not hurt the rest of your site in search. Fix the ones that visitors and other sites actually reach.

Redirects

301, 302, 404 or 410?

Answer with the status that matches what happened to the page.

Status Meaning When to use it
301 Moved for good The page has a new address. Search engines move the old address’s signals to the new one.
302, 307 Moved for now The move is temporary, so search engines keep the original address indexed.
404 Not found The page is gone or never existed. Show an error page with search and links to key sections.
410 Gone The page was removed on purpose. Google handles 404 and 410 the same way for indexing.
Soft 404 Error page that answers 200 Search Console reports these as soft 404s. Send a real 404 status with the error page.

What this tool checks

 • Links and images Every link in an and every image in an on the page, after resolving relative URLs.
 • Status of each URL A HEAD request first; a GET (body discarded) when the server does not support HEAD. Redirects are followed up to 5 hops.
 • Grouping Broken (4xx or 5xx), could not connect, redirected, and fine, with broken ones listed first.

How to fix common problems

A link returns 404
Update the link to the page’s new address, or add a 301 redirect from the old address so existing links and bookmarks keep working.
A link redirects
Redirects work, but each one adds a request. Point internal links straight at the final URL.
An image is broken
Check that the file was deployed and that the path and letter case match. CDNs often serve stale 404s, so purge the cached path after fixing it.

Questions

Does it crawl my whole site?

No. It checks the links on the one page you enter. Run it on your most important pages, such as the homepage, pricing and top articles.

Why does an external link show an error when it works in my browser?

Some sites block automated requests or answer slowly. Open the link yourself before you remove it.

Is this tool free?

Yes. You do not need an account. Each IP address can run 10 checks a minute and 100 a day, and a website can be checked 10 times in 10 minutes across all visitors so the tool is never used to flood a site.

Do you store the URL or the results?

The result is kept for 10 minutes so a repeated check is instant, then it is deleted. We do not log the URLs you check or the content of the page.
