# SMS and phone call alerts

Get a text for critical problems and a short automatic call when a site goes down. Each person gets them on their own verified number.

## What the SMS and phone calls integration does

### What it does

- Texts each chosen person when a critical problem opens. Visual changes and warnings never go by phone.
- Calls when a site or page stops answering. The recovery comes as a text only.
- Counts towards a monthly allowance: Growth includes 50 SMS or calls a month and Agency 200. When it is used up, alerts go by email and Slack only until the 1st.

### Before you start

- A paid Growth and Agency plan. The 14-day free trial does not include SMS or calls; they start with a paid plan.
- Owner or admin role to add the phone channel.
- Each person who should get texts or calls verifies their own mobile number.

## Set up SMS and phone calls step by step

### 1. Verify your mobile number

Each person opens Settings → Profile, enters their mobile number and types the 6-digit code Rookflare texts them. Only mobile numbers are accepted.

### 2. Add a phone channel

Open Notifications → Channels, select “Add channel” and choose Phone. Turn on “Send SMS for critical alerts”, “Call me when a site goes down” or both, and tick who gets them.

### 3. Check the channel and the allowance

The channel shows “SMS and calls” with the number of people. Phone channels have no test message; the card on the Channels tab shows how many phone alerts this month has used.

### 4. Choose which alerts each website sends

On the Alert preferences tab, pick the lowest severity that alerts for each website (Critical, High, Medium or Low) and whether resolved notices and the daily summary go out. Visual changes to review follow the same setting.

Sample endpoint and placeholder token. The dashboard fills in yours.

## If it does not work

### Someone gets no texts

They have no verified number yet. People without one can be chosen and start receiving alerts once they verify in Settings → Profile.

### “This month’s phone alerts are used up”

The monthly allowance is spent. Email and Slack alerts still go out, and phone alerts start again on the 1st.

### The verification code does not come

Wait a minute before asking for a new code; Rookflare allows a few codes per hour per person and number. Check that the number is a mobile number with the right country code.

## SMS and phone calls integration questions

### What counts as a phone alert?

Each text or call to one person counts as one, so a critical issue texted to two people uses two. Failed sends do not count.

### When does Rookflare call instead of texting?

Only when a site or page stops answering, if the channel has calls turned on. Every other critical problem comes as a text.

### Can we use a shared on-call number?

Phone alerts go to the verified number of each chosen team member. A shared phone works if it belongs to a team member who verified it.
